The Library

LibraryWe are fortunate to have a spacious and attractive library that aims to provide a relaxed atmosphere in which all pupils can study or read for pleasure. We strive to provide a relevant and stimulating resource of up to date, attractive books and other learning materials that reflects the interests of the pupils as well as the demands of the curriculum.  We also have a suite of computers, with Internet access.

With the advice of subject teachers, books and other materials are chosen for pupils of all abilities, and stock is reviewed at regular intervals. Resources in the library reflect our equal opportunities policy and we provide non-sexist and multi-cultural material. In addition to books chosen by departments, the library has always responded to suggestions from pupils and parents, providing popular fiction and current affairs material.

Book Review

Book Review by Tanya Dunn (Year 8)

Book The Doomspell by Cliff McNish

Rachel is transported to another world with her brother Eric, through their basement wall. In this world, Rachel discovers that she gains extraordinary powers; enabling her to fly, shape shift and much more. Unfortunately, Rachel and Eric also discover who dragged them away – the Witch – who is excited that she finally met her match, power wise. The witch's plans for Rachel are big, and could tempt her well, but for her victims, Rachel is there only hope.

'The Doomspell' is beautifully written and is part one of The Doomspell Triliogy by Cliff McNish. Almost anyone who likes a fantasy story should read this. It's aimed, in my opinion, at over tens, and up to any age. Each page is brilliant, over flowing with magic. All of the characters get you involved with the story, hoping it turns out good/bad for each one of them. Every chapter has been carefully named, giving only the slightest hint as to what it's about; making you, want to read on to find out. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone.

Rating (/5): StarStarStarStar

The library is open for use at lunchtime and the library operates a regular homework club and after school club.  Homework club users have access to the computers and the Internet to help them with work.

Material is always accessible to all pupils, even those who may find the library slightly daunting, and help is usually on hand from the teacher librarian.  We are constantly striving to promote the use of the library to ensure all pupils are confident library users and have the necessary research skills to equip them for their educational challenges.

Pupils have the opportunity to become assistant librarians, taking responsibility for a variety of tasks, including use of the computerised issuing and retrieval system.

We hope to encourage reading and pleasure in books, and will endeavour to continue our policy of inviting visiting authors, poets and book illustrators into the school.

Careers Education

Careers Education starts at Years 7 and 8 with decision-making exercises and self-evaluation. In Year 9 parents and pupils are asked to give some thought to possible career areas that might be of interest in the future.  Year 9 is also given an introduction to a careers software programme and the use of the Careers' Library.  Year 10 and 11 Careers Education is carried on through the pastoral programme, which is compulsory for all pupils, as well as timetabled lessons in Careers Education.  Here careers are examined in more detail, with each pupil having access to a computer-aided process intended to identify possible careers that match their aptitudes and interests.  Each Year 10 pupil is offered a diagnostic interview and each Year 11 is offered a full, individual interview.  In Year 10 all pupils have the opportunity to undertake 2 weeks experience of the world of work.

The school is supported by Connexions in all aspects of Careers Education and each Year 11 pupil is interviewed by a Connexions Personal Advisor and can be accompanied by their parents. The Connexions Personal Adviser also assists with Job Search skills and is available in the Careers Library at various lunchtime sessions.
