A BIG PLUS FOR GIFTED MATHS BOY
A BRIGHT spark from Boldon has chalked up a top result in a European maths challenge.
James Hall, 14, from Boldon School, New Road, has proved he's a real whizzkid when it come to figures.
The talented teenager took part in a national maths challenge, walking away with a silver prize and gaining direct entry into an exclusive European competition.
He joined pupils from across Europe, as well as gifted youngsters from Mexico and Brazil, by taking part in the challenge at the end of March.
And he showed just how clever he is after gaining a distinction - putting him in the top 25 per cent of worldwide participants.
Joyce Hirst, maths teacher at the school, said: "James took the one-hour problem-solving paper at the school on the same day as all the other participants across the world.
"He seemed to really relish the challenge, considering the questions are very difficult."
The teenager, who is in the top maths set at his school, has impressed his teachers in the past by excelling in maths exams.
Mrs Hirst, who is also the gifted and talented co-ordinator at the school, said: "We did not really know what to expect, since this is a very prestigious competition which is open to pupils strictly by invitation only.
"So when we heard that James had managed to secure a distinction we were all thrilled. It really is an excellent achievement."
Mrs Hirst also praised the youngster for all the hard work he put into the competition during the past few months.
She added: "Although James does have a lot of natural mathematical ability, just as importantly, he is a very hard worker.
"We are predicting a bright future for him."
