ESC team [Image: Members of staff]The Education Support Centre (ESC) is an additional facility that complements any support already given by subject teachers, departments and pastoral teams.

It provides a supportive facility (withdrawal, in-class support and counselling) for pupils and also helps them to continue with their normal working curriculum.  The ESC will work towards breaking down any barriers to learning that pupils may have, whether they be academic, behavioural or social.

Pupils may require support because of:

  • Difficulties at transition;
  • Reintegration problems (e.g. transferring schools, returning from long term absence, exclusion);
  • Underachieving due to e.g. learning difficulties, social difficulties, attendance, illness, attitude to work/school, and problems outside of school.
  • Stress due to bereavement, family break-up, teenage pregnancy or bullying;
  • Problems with behaviour and social skills where help will be provided with e.g. anger management, the need to accept rules, routines, sanctions and authority, improvement with social and communication skills.

Referred pupils work with the ESC manager and staff.  An action plan will be established which will work on targets that will help them to return to mainstream classes using a staged re-integrations process.

The ESC aims to help and improve attendance, discipline and attainment in the school.
