At Boldon School physical education is compulsory for all pupils, and all year groups are timetabled for 2 lessons per week. Most classes are taught in single sex groups and follow a broad and balanced curriculum.
Within the department there are 6 full time members of staff and a full time swimming instructor. All pupils have the opportunity to benefit from the school's extensive sporting facilities, which include a swimming pool, sports hall, indoor bowls hall, gymnasium, 2 squash courts, a hard court outside area and large playing fields. Shower facilities are available at the school and pupils are encouraged to use them.
Pupils are encouraged to join in extra-curricular activities. Staff run school teams as well as organising non-competitive and recreational activities, giving everyone the opportunity to be active, regardless of their ability. Lunchtime and evening sessions are held throughout the year for both individual and team practices. Competition takes place throughout the year and in July the department organises its annual sports day at Monkton Stadium, where pupils compete in inter house athletics events.
To satisfy Health and Safety requirements, no jewellery of any kind is to be worn in lessons. A valuables box is provided for pupil use. When pupils are unable to participate in lessons they are expected to bring a covering note from home explaining the problem. Where the illness or injury is of a long-term nature, a medical note will be required.
Staff devote much time and effort to encourage all pupils not only to take part in all activities, but also to enjoy them. Opportunities are given to help pupils develop self-esteem and confidence, and as well as helping to improve physical skills. The department also tries to develop an understanding of the importance of exercise in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Good quality uniform in school colours can only be ordered from Trutex. See our uniform page for further information.
Boldon School has an enviable reputation for its outstanding record of sporting achievements at the highest level. It is hoped that all children who attend the school will benefit from the staff's expertise and enthusiasm, and that they will enjoy making the most of their sporting opportunities.
